How Stored Value Works Sales Displays are setup by store merchants in highly visible areas for impulse shoppers. Areas such cash check out lines are good. A customer that wants to purchase a Gift Card can do so with cash, check or credit card for any amount they wish. The amount of which the card was purchased becomes “stored value” is recorded in the host database. Redemptions The customer presents their gift card at the time of purchasing an item. The card is swiped through a POS terminal for authorization to the host database. The card is then identified and deductions from the stores value at that time are made. Reload Incentives A customer is able to purchase additional value or “reload” the card for any amount they wish by phone. Incentives can be offered to customers who reload their gift cards increasing customer loyalty. Data Processing The stored value card system operates in real time as a closed loop debit network. All transaction are transmitted from a POS terminal to the Data Center. Once the transaction is authorized and captured in both the merchant/client database a printer produces a receipt for each transaction. Included in the receipt is the card balance for both the merchant and customer.
